The Disclosure service is provided by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). The service is used by organisations to obtain criminal records checks when recruiting staff to work with children and vulnerable adults.
Organisations that would like to use criminal record checks as part of safer recruitment need to be registered with the CRB or use the services of an umbrella body such as WCVA Criminal Records Unit.
The CRB has access to information held on the Police National Computer and by local police forces, as well as lists held by various government departments of people who are banned from working with children and vulnerable adults.
Disclosure can only be used by organisations that are entitled to know about someone's criminal record as defined under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order. The information released on Disclosure is of a sensitive and personal nature. It is important that any such information is handled with confidentiality and care, and according to a Code of Practice.
There are two levels of Disclosure; STANDARD and ENHANCED. The level of check is related to the job role and responsibilities.
How can WCVA CRU help?
- We can advise if your organisation is able to access Disclosure and is entitled to ask exempted questions as set out in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act
- We can advise on the level of check necessary for a particular job position
- We can help your organisation comply with the Code of Practice which applies to all who request and receive disclosure information.
